SAP APO | celver AG

In a nutshell

For many years, SAP APO (Advanced Planning and Optimization) was SAP's core supply chain planning solution. The software supported companies in demand planning, supply planning, production planning, network planning, and available-to-promise processes.

Many of today's established supply chain management planning processes were originally implemented using SAP APO. With the introduction of SAP Integrated Business Planning (SAP IBP), however, SAP is now pursuing a new, cloud-based strategy for future supply chain planning.

As a result, many companies are currently asking themselves what the future of their existing APO landscape should look like.

Why is SAP APO important?

Although the end of mainstream support for SAP APO has been officially announced for the end of 2027, the solution continues to play a business-critical role in numerous companies. Many planning processes for demand, supply, production, or inventory are still based on APO models that have been developed and optimized over the years.

At the same time, the world of planning is undergoing fundamental changes. Today, companies want to establish more integrated planning processes, simulate scenarios more quickly, and leverage modern capabilities such as AI, real-time analytics, and cloud-based platforms. In addition, there is a growing need to integrate supply chain, finance, and corporate planning in the context of xP&A.

Against this backdrop, the question of SAP APO’s future role is becoming increasingly important. For many companies, this is not just about a technical software change. Often, the focus is on the fundamental question of what a modern planning architecture should look like and what role solutions such as SAP IBP, SAP Analytics Cloud, Board, Anaplan, or other platforms will play in the future.

That's why the real challenge is often not:

"How do we replace APO?"

but rather:

"What will our future planning landscape look like?"

How does celver AG provide support?

celver AG has been assisting companies for many years in the development and modernization of supply chain planning processes.

We’ve noticed, particularly among APO customers, that the end of mainstream support for the software itself is merely the catalyst for thinking about how planning should proceed in the future. Therefore, the more important question is which business requirements need to be met going forward and which platform best supports those requirements.

Typical questions from our customers include:

  • How much longer should SAP APO continue to be used?
  • Which processes should be modernized?
  • Is SAP IBP the right successor solution?
  • What role do SAP Analytics Cloud or other software solutions play?
  • How can demand planning, supply planning, and S&OP be integrated in the future?
  • And how can operational and financial planning be more closely integrated?

We deliberately avoid taking a technology-driven approach. Not every company needs the same target architecture. Some organizations benefit from switching to SAP IBP, while others rely on integrated xP&A platforms or hybrid architectures.

Our goal is to work with our customers to develop a future-proof planning environment that effectively integrates business requirements, processes, and technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SAP APO still have a future?

Many companies continue to use SAP APO in production. At the same time, SAP is increasingly focusing its strategic planning efforts on SAP IBP and cloud-based solutions. As a result, many companies are currently reevaluating their long-term planning strategies.

Is SAP IBP the successor to SAP APO?

SAP IBP is positioned as a strategic successor solution for many planning areas. In practice, however, the optimal migration strategy depends heavily on existing processes and requirements.

Do we need to replace SAP APO right away?

Not necessarily. The right decision depends on the individual situation, system landscape, business requirements, and long-term strategy.

Which APO processes are typically modernized?

Today, companies frequently consider demand planning, supply planning, S&OP, and inventory optimization as part of modernization projects.

What is the biggest challenge in developing an APO succession strategy?

In most cases, the software isn't the biggest challenge. Rather, the key question is what future planning processes should look like and how they can be optimally supported.

What alternatives to SAP APO are there?

Depending on the objectives, various platforms may be considered, such as SAP IBP, Board, Anaplan, or other modern xP&A and supply chain planning solutions.

How are SAP APO and xP&A related?

Many companies are using the replacement or modernization of their APO landscape as an opportunity to more closely integrate operational supply chain planning with financial planning and corporate management, thereby establishing an integrated xP&A solution.
